White Lies are recently for me a new indicator of quality of modern music, its interpretation, melodic, consistency, structure etc. The latest album of British musicians appeared quite recently, so the time to write a few words about this work is perfect. However, as it is often with the case of favorite things, it will be hard to be objective.
The album as a rather dense production, requires concentration during the first few listenings, because in almost every track is going on a lot, and as you know after a few listenings you can catch the flavor, which previously slipped away. The record is definitely less rock from as eminent predecessors as To Lose My Life and Ritual, but definitely strong, full of extremely strong emotions, simply stated, without beating about the bush, for what it is received better by the recipient.
The story, which is conjured by boys, is unhappy journey into yourself, which treats about broken life pieces of the girl in a large metropolitan area, who may take an attempt to put them together. Is this a deliberate positioning as unfortunate teenagers? I do not think so. None unreal dolorous things. Pain, melancholy, lyricism embedded in brutal present day.
After hearing the first title track Big TV, I knew, that all what is signed with this brand can be taken blindfully, and the whole album will knock me down on the shoulders. Musically in the climate of dark, but melodic 80’s. Monumental! Brilliantly sung and equally brilliantly arranged. Next one There Goes Our Love Again is another bullet! Heights of modern rock, in addition catchy, genuine chorus. Comparisons to Joy Division, Tears For Fears and Duran Duran are obviously justified, but what distinguishes White Lies from predecessors is unusual freshness, dynamism, elegance, depth, spatial sound, ability to build tension and of course impeccable, outstanding vocals of Harry McVeigh. Rock note at Be Your Man or Goldmine collides there with newly romantic ballads Tricky To Love, Heaven Wait, that actually squeeze the listener by its solemnity in the chair. Not to mention the mega-hit single Getting Even, which just now deserves to be called a cult number. White Lies are confident in what they do and perfectly dose musical experience to us.
Cheap tinsel, once too plastic, other time too dark sound and previously mentioned posing on unfortunate teenagers are the main objections from some critics. But I have the impression that a bunch of fans of that release will be systematically increased.
