Gerostenkorp is a French, one-man musical project initiated in 2002. Its founder, Daniel Larose, after years of experimenting with sounds, released in 2006 his debut "Le Mécanisme De L'Aube" (" The Mechanism of Dawn"). In respect of the genre, the album represents a wide diversity. It offers a mix of dark ambient, noise and industrial. Interestingly, compositions inspired by tribal music that bring to mind ancient rituals or recordings of mysterious human voices emerging from murmurs and resounding with echoes can also be found on this album.
I get an impression that Larose somewhat recklessly put on the record the material he had created in the previous years. The following tracks sometimes differ sharply from each other, a lack of continuity is perceptible, on the other hand it might be a deliberate manoeuvre in order to disorientate the listener and thus render the project more ambiguous. What binds Le Mécanisme De L'Aube together is the atmosphere – disturbing, dark and absorbing. The union of three sound dimensions – nature, machine and human
It’s worth to point out that Daniel Larose in his live performances does not confine himself to music by itself, but makes use of such means of artistic expression as – visualizations, painting, dance or theatrical forms and what is more, his successive performances feature different artists making each of his live acts unique in its kind.
To sum it up, despite some shortcomings and the impression of incoherence it gives, Mécanisme De L'Aube can be an intriguing musical journey and holds out a promise of subsequent, more elaborate releases. From all the compositions on this album I have a particular liking for the last one – a live recording – unfortunately of a bad quality, nonetheless, a good prophecy for the future.
