After an unquestionable success of the German trio Head-Less that was the release of their first longplay Rouge et Noir, it is time for a new opening to the band. On a crowded German electro pop scene you have to stand out hard, to catch the attention of more and more demanding fans. Does Head-Less cope with it?
To be honest, after first few sessions there was nothing. None of the songs presented on the album stayed with me for longer. What was left was an impression, that timber of singer’s voice is quite annoying. Strangely at some point I noticed, that I unconsciously started to stamp the rhythm with my feet. Something clicked.
The problem with Imperfect: [mensch] lies in the fact, that it is difficult to find out one dominant, which would uniquely allow to identify Germans record. Effect of the album consists of tolerable, warm sound, almost a textbook composition and... lack of fire. After shallow opening record is opened by a cool, rhythmical Punish Your Head, which will surely be exposed on the dance floors in German clubs. There can be heard the pop persistence of the vocalist Rene Hentzschel which will not necessarily appeal to ebm purists, but it is not a disadvantage. Next track - Burning, although it is ear-catching it seems to be at inadequate place. The release has not accelerated for good, and it already slows down unnecessarily. Especially, that dance hit We Stand In Hope reminds, that it is a primarily dance music, full of vigor and pumping positive energy into listener.
After another fault that is synth pop ballad Als Ich Fortging, it comes time for a pleasant Forgiving and in my opinion the best number on the album - You. Keyboards pleasantly caress the ear drums, showing mastery of Matthias Marko who is in charge of sound. It will be another inevitable club hit.
Another ballad slip before crowning the album The Deep Insight happily is overshadowed by its quality. I will never understand the plan behind that and no other order of the tracks on Imperfect: [mensch]. But, as they say, "no matter how you start, it is important how you end," and The Deep Insight is an ideal finalizing of the record - a strong, clear and remaining with the listener for longer even after removing headphones from the head.
Despite the weaker, more dull parts, you can enjoy the album. Fans of synth pop will swallow without a beverage and will jump to the next, so if you are not an avid fan of the genre, I recommend first to get know with Imperfect: [mensch], before buying it.
