More than a year after “Razorblade Romance” and HIM presents its new release entitled „Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights”. One is indisputable – the band knows how to surprise their fans, but the question is-to what extend this surprise is a positive one? Huge popularity, lots of concerts and interviews seem to be the causes of lack of strength to make this record refined. Take also into consideration changes within the band – new keyboard player Burton, instead of Pluto – and you have a new material, which, unfortunately, doesn't bowl over. This time you may find more sweetness than the last time. Not to mention the fact, that the most of the songs are ballads. The heaviest ones, and at the same time the best ones, seem to be „Lose You Tonight”, „Heartache Every Moment” and, used as a promo single, „Pretending”, which is a bonus track on the CD. There is some kind of melancholy and traces of Gothic sounds, typical for the beginning of the band, but also few other interesting elements. The best example is the last track „Love You Like I Do”, where sounds are mixed with, lower than normally, voice of Ville. In some way this CD is saved by sad, but also full of warmth, song „In Joy And Sorrow” - one of the best in band's history. Unfortunately the whole album is rather average one. Maybe it's because of the recent problems with the label and a great number of changes HIM has undergone through the last few months. All in all there has been some kind of experiment done and the experiment is kind a failure.
