I'm seldom inclined to delve into older releases, but I'll make an exception here. The Italian quartet Instant Lake has been active since 2015, and their music can be best described as an ephemeral blend of electronics, guitars, and atmospheric vocals. It's a fusion of rock and post-punk with an industrial edge, where these musicians craft their sonic tapestry in a dark, enigmatic, and symbolic manner.
In their compositions, the bass and guitar take center stage, while the vocals, slightly distorted with a reverberating backdrop, create an intriguing echo effect or serve as a subtle theatrical commentary behind the main lines. The overall style is sleek, leaning towards electronic-industrial with occasional hints of rock or metal ("Trauma," "Blackflag") and elements of post-punk ("Delicate Obscenity," "Ludopathia"). Occasionally, there are surprising moments, like catchy trance sequences ("White Noise") or exceptionally sublime and spatially dynamic passages, as heard in the closing track "Tirsh."
It seems that since their 2017 release "Refractory," the band has shifted towards more atmospheric and refined melodies, reducing the prominence of electronics and beats.

Instant Lake, formed in 2015 by Dario Amoroso (synth/drum machine) and Pierluigi Michele Grauso (guitars), later joined by Carlo Landolfi (bass guitar) and Gennaro De Lena (vocals and lyrics), began as an experimental duo in Caserta, Italy. Their new wave/post-punk demos caught the attention of specialized labels, leading to a deal with Brazilian Wave Records. They released their first album "Refractory" in 2016, followed by singles like "Sit Back." Their second studio album "Dystodream" showcased a more versatile sound with electronic influences. They've performed in various Italian and European cities and continue to evolve their sound, with a third album slated for autumn 2023. The next chance to see them will be at Dark Malta 2024.
