Maybe sometimes it's good to take a rest from EBM beats and Neofolk melancholy? If you find that idea attractive, it's worth taking a look at a scene akin to "ours". Mgła (Mist) is not a band for the faint-eared people with a low scream tolerance. It's a black metal project doing quite well. I shall not try to make you think I'm a metal fan - treat this review as layman's opinion on this short (only 11 minutes long) release.
Two tracks, the first one entitled "Mdłości I" (Nausea I) (I didn't feel any - Nihil), begins like a typical metal song - a strong riff and building up pressure towards the center of the track. You don't have to wait long - and you won't be disappointed as well. When they start playing, they play for good - a typical black metal vocal, drums faster than Lucky Luke, not to mention the guitars. What's interesting is that they represent the more atmospheric black metal approach - even though they lack "keys and whining", which usually accompany the black metal mood. The atmosphere, a bit elevated, a bit more pathetic, is based on guitars and the song's pacing - and it does slow down and speed up from time to time, following its creator's wishes. The second track - "Mdłości II" (Nausea II) (nothing happened, although the coffee gave me quite a heartburn), is not significantly different from the first one, at least to my ears. It might be a bit more atmospheric, it doesn't give me the chance to tap my higher inner self, though. A similar method - a black metal vocal, typical choppy drums (in my humble opinion those simply surpass an average human's abilities - Nihil), and a bit less typical guitar. Why? I can't really tell where did that idea come from to my head, but I think it's responsible for creating the atmosphere I've already mentioned before. Let me put it like this - it's a very short record, totally undemanding. You don't need to have a lot of time, you don't need to focus on the lyrics, you don't need to wonder at the musical craft here. I would never say it's a weak release, though. You know - sometimes it's really good to take a break from the usual stuff, and this is just perfect for such moments.
