Rein [Forced] did not hesitate to play the industrial music they wanted to play when they released their first album, back in 2012. Their uncompromising approach to tropes of current club oriented electro resulted in a record of relentless gritty energy but still X Amount of Stabwounds in the Back seemed to slip under the radar of many genre devotees. The subsequent success of the Kickstarter campaign that helped bring the follow up to that album to life was a welcome symptom of the ongoing creative vitality of not only the band but also the fans. The resulting Pre-Existing Conditions, is an epic collection of 25 remixes, b-sides and covers, a gift to the scene and, in many ways, a celebration of Rein [Forced]'s début.
The sheer volume of content is enough to recommend the album to all industrial enthusiasts but more impressively, for the most part, quantity does not overwhelm the quality of the work brought together on Pre-Existing Conditions and you can expect to be surprised by a diverse range of styles and moods..
From "Amplified's" drown out and hypnotic ambient tones that echo Underworld's classic "Moaner" through lively and crisp sounds served by Italian XP8 to the aggressive dubstep influence of Die Sektor, most tracks consistently hint at the variety of electronic moods and methods at work.
In all this richness there is but one mystifying void-"Dichotomy" presented itself as arguably the strongest and most diverse track of the original release but the justifiable attention that was given to the many incarnations on the remix album never results in a version that comes close to fulfilling song's massive potential. "Dichotomy" remains a hydra-like musical entity, at once immediately danceable and harsh with sharp industrial sounds, the inclusion of the single edit only exemplifies that this complex melange is never bested despite receiving a makeover from five different bands- Ego Likeness and Stiff Valentine amongst the others.
Perhaps naturally not all of the material gives in easily and allows itself to be moulded into different musical forms but there is an abundance of stellar work on Pre-Existing Conditions that helps balance the shortcomings of the many disappointing faces of "Dichotomy". Each listener will surely be able to pick unique favourites but whether you go with Mindless Faith's guitar heavy "Embodiment of Hope", dynamic and electrifying mix of "2xPain" from Cryogen Second or the bouncy, EBM oriented "Malignancy" delivered by Cynical Existence, you are in for a sonic treat. All acts manage to imprint their identity upon the textures of Rein [Forced]'s raw music, even if some tracks are being pulled towards the more straightforward electro club fodder.
