What do we get when we mix Meshuggah and Soilwork? Obviously this will be, emerging from Austria, The Sorrow. After the powerful debut, which was appreciated within the world-wide sphere of hard music, the band recorded "Origin of the Storm" – the album of equally high quality.
The band plays extremely technically but still quite melodiously. The second album brings more clear sound and proves that musicians have found their balance between catchy, almost pop-like choruses and violent lyrics which are shouted out laud straight into the ear of a potential listener. Aggressive guitars, merciless sound of drums and core vocal constitute a hallmark of The Sorrow. Even though the sound spectrum of this album stylistically moves within metalcore it does not mean the lack of clear guitar parts, though the members of the group are careful not to make it too light and pleasant. The specific gravity is entirely maintained. It is hard, momentarily it’s almost death metal.
One is absolutely struck by the vocals, rhythmical guitar parts and merciless sounds of the drums. From the very beginning of "Where is the sun?" it is obvious that The Sorrow rules and the strong points of "Origin of the Storm" are unquestionably fast rate of the songs, devoted vocals and musical mastery.
However, after listening to the album for a few times, one may have an impression that the band has worked out a certain musical formula which they stubbornly apply to all of the songs. There is no surprise here, no considerable sound experiments and even no trials of guitar clipping. Undoubtedly the album constitutes a great piece of music with mastery of studio sound which however does not surprise in any way. It is heavy, laud, aggressive but without any surprises.
Instead, thanks to including live versions of the songs, it is possible to see that, while playing a concert, The Sorrow is as powerful and professional as in the studio.
