I like listening to highly melodic electro /synth pop songs while driving a car. Therefore I really wanted to check the seventh volume of the Electropop compilation, which presents new and fresh bands playing this kind of music. The bands on this CD indeed seem to be not well-known yet, though some of the songs have been enriched by support of such big names as Mesh, Assemblage 23 and Felix Marc.
Band names and song titles on this CD are quite dark and / or sophisticated, but in contrast the music presented here is mostly light and cheerful, sometimes even reminding me of a summer vacation at the sea-side and happy pop hits played in promenade cafes. I must admit I prefer synth pop a little bit darker than this, even though the songs in this compilation are of an acceptable standard and with catchy tunes. As far as vocals are concerned, the compilation is dominated by metrosexual boysband type vocals. Most of the singers should definitely work on their technique, since even if they do quite well in verses, they are often defeated by more demanding choruses. I am also wondering whether the significant length of some of these songs is really justified (the longest track here lasts for more than 8 minutes!) – after all, this is not a complicated kind of music, with rich wealth of sounds and sophisticated arrangements, which you discover slowly and gradually, and which you contemplate.
I would recommend the entire compilation to devoted fans of this kind of music. As for me, I will gladly listen in my car only to some tracks from this CD. My personal number 1 here is the song by Mental Discipline (no 7), featuring Felix Marc, whose presence here can be heard and felt. Track 10, played by a band with a romantic gothic name Sad January, is also quite interesting. The songs remixed by Mesh and Assemblage 23 are also nice, even though in case of the latter, the chorus spoils the overall positive impression. Some other songs are quite acceptable as well, provided we don’t have too high expectations from vocals and arrangements. At least the tunes are catchy, as they should be in this kind of music, and quite a few of these tracks could be good to dance to at an electro pop party in a club.
