1989 on the electronica scene - the already cult Depeche Mode reach their 10th anniversary, precursors of electromusic and a new approach to sound, probably partially responsible for influencing that what later became Nine Inch Nails.
Pretty Hate Machine had four producers: Adrian Sherwood, Le Blanc, Flood (Depeche Mode, U2, Erasure) and John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, Love And Rockets). Some of them had to quit, as they were involved in the production of other albums (Flood - Depeche Mode - "Violator"). The LP was created on a "simple" Macintosh as a demo, then got to the studio.
Head Like a Hole is a definite hit here, leading us with an electrifying videoclip into new territories. The setting of the 80's took its toll here. Harsh guitar riffs combined with samples, auto-live drums, bass thumping and crowned with Trent's amazing vocals come together as something futuristic in this new genre. One should remember that NIN are the pioneers of industrial electronic. They have revolutionised the market with their use of electronics. They were the first ones to start a new movement on that scale in music, with electronica and guitars, no holds barred.
Something I Can Never Have, Kinda I Want To, Sin - tracks that make you feel alienated. Reverberated, precisely dosed moods showing that an interesting melody with moving vocals and appropriate instrumentation can push the listener into mystical ecstasy of erotic technology.
This music isn't meant for everyone, but once you walk into this world, you won't leave it quickly. Reznor initiated a style with this album that he's been continuing ever since. It became clear on The Fragile. It's the tops from that moment. Cutting off the coupons. He did his job. A great plus, as the world music would be terribly poor without Nine Inch Nails.
