Noise
Noise music is one of several genres of music that feature nontraditional musical instruments. Noise music may incorporate, for example: manipulated recordings, static, feedback, live machine sound, circuit bent instruments, non-musical vocal elements, or any other noise source. The genre is an avant-garde style that explores cacophony, repetitive sounds, atonal randomness, indeterminacy and dissonance to produce buildups and releases of emotional tension connected to the chthonic through dissonance and resolution. This emancipation of the dissonance was a concept put forth by Arnold Schoenberg (composer of atonal music and the inventor of the twelve tone technique) and others, including his pupil Anton Webern. The modern noise genre is largely a creation of Japanese noise musicians from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
